Bar Review: Strange Brew

Just down the street, about 100 metres to the west of the Ramada Hotel, in Wuyang Xinchang, is "Strange Brew." Formerly known as "Lucid Lounge," the place has undergone some interior remodeling and a name change - the brainchild of a customer, who's a fan of Canadian comic duo Bob and Doug McKenzie.

"The Liver is Evil and Must Be Punished." So says the Book of Rams, chapter 3 verse 31 to be precise. This pearl of wisdom is on display at the pub's entrance, proudly fixed to a Guangzhou Rams rugby shirt.

There is an excellent range of spirits just behind the bar, including some top-shelf Canadian whiskies and brandies. On tap are two especially good beers, which are served in proper glasses - German brew Weisels at RMB45 per pint and Belgian brew DeKonnink at RMB38 per half pint; less during happy hour. Wines are generally from the "New World" with a respectable house wine from Chile called Campo Largo which sells for RMB30 per glass, or RMB148 per bottle. A range of Australian, Chilean and Californian wines are also on offer, including Wente Brothers' superb White Zinfandel at RMB348 per bottle...
