More and More Foreigners Chasing Their Dreams in Guangzhou

Updated Beijing Time

Guangzhou is attracting tens of thousands of foreigners every year, including senior management staff, office goers, foreign teachers and students.

The hospitality of the Cantonese is one of the most attractive part of the charm of Guangzhou city, said foreigners living and working in the city.

"We are like living in our own homeland," said a foreigner working in Guangzhou, "because locals treat us as their country fellows."
"Besides, the food here is also very good.”

Foreigners seeking Green Card in Guangzhou

Dozens of foreigners have been granted green card in Guangzhou.

David Young was the first green-card holder in Guangzhou.

"Now I need not worry whether I could return to Guangzhou while in Britain."

Mrs. Luo, David's wife, could still remember their embarrassing experience in 2005.

"When my husband applied for a visa in 2005, it took him several months."

"With the green card, he can get the visa within 20 days."

Falling in love with a Cantonese girl

Shannon Doak, an American working in the American International School of Guangzhou, fell in love with Lei Jing, a native girl.

Born in Maine, Shannon came to Guangzhou in 1997 and met Lei Jing the next year in the training school where he worked.

Lei Jing worked as his assistant at that time.

As time went by, he fell in love with this native girl.

Refusing to jump the queue

"I feel foreigners are treated too well in Guangzhou," said Shannon Doak, "and I don't want that."

One time, Shannon and a friend went to a McDonalds outlet in Guangzhou, where many people were lining up.

The manager of the restaurant, when seeing them, asked them to jump the queue.

"We refused instantly," said Shannon, "it was very impolite as other people have to queue up, so why should we jump the queue to save time."

"We just want the natives to treat us as their equals."
