Marc De Schutter: Good to People, People will be Good to You

As for Marc De Schutter, head of Guangzhou Puratos Food CY Ltd., the most impressive thing during his working period in Guangzhou is the formidable speed of change in all aspects of society. It's not just about visible features as buildings, roads and cars. It's even more about the intangibles as people’s aspirations for the future, their dreams and ambitions.

As for his employees who have worked with him for 10 full years, the most impressive thing about the man is that he is a real gentleman whenever at work or in life.

He treats people equally and with great compassion, the employees recalled. They prove their words with Marc's frequent citation: if you are good to your people, people will also be good to you. With this principle, the company set up a unique culture with a great success. All the managers who joined from the very beginning are still working now in the company.

When the company moved from west of Guangzhou to Panyu, it lost nobody. Even the local cleaning lady would like to move with the company. Since it has set up quite high company operation standards, it is not influenced by the new labour contract law at all.

Marc used to work in Xi'an between 1988 and 1992 and then returned to Belgium, his homeland. However, he missed working in China so much that he was looking for an opportunity to return. His current employer gave him the assignment to start a new enterprise in Guangzhou. This city was the first choice for many reasons, amongst which the food history, availability of well-educated staff, a cooperative government and levels of cost. Time has proven that this was the right choice indeed.

During his work in the city, he has got the greatest achievement by having built a sustainable development model for the well-being of all the company’s staff and their families, respecting all the stakeholders involved in an enterprise. It makes Marc proud to see his staff developing from "apprentices" towards "instructors".

Now, he plans to work in Guangzhou as long as possible.
