Why the city set up the Yangcheng Friendship Award

Foreign experts, more than 30,000 person-time in Guangzhou annually, is eyed as an important strength to lift Guangzhou to the status of a "charming metropolis with extensive international influence", according to the city's 11th Five Year Plan.

With more and more foreign experts living and working in Guangzhou, the city will certainly be more international and competitive, and become an international metropolis fit for living and working for both home and overseas talents.

To further advocate the harmonious development of Guangzhou and attract more foreign talents, Guangzhou decided to confer the fourth Yangcheng Friendship Award.

Some 46 foreign experts were recommended for the Yangcheng Friendship Award, and finally 14 experts, who have made outstanding contribution to Guangzhou will be awarded on Sunday, March 29.

Through awarding these foreign experts, the city hopes to express the goodwill of the Cantonese people, advocate the Guangzhou Municipal Government's respect to knowledge and talents, and inspire the foreign experts to contribute to the economic and social development of the city and promote sino-foreign cultural exchange.

The city also hopes to attract more foreign experts to Guangzhou to contribute in the city's internationalization process.

Who are foreign experts?

The so-called foreign experts actually refer to foreign professionals and high-level talents.

Foreign experts have made unique contribution to the economic and social development of Guangzhou in the past and they are still important today.

There two categories of foreign experts based on the characteristics of their profession and their job: one category includes the management and technical staff working in enterprises, which we refer to as economic and technical experts; the other includes cultural and educational talents who work in the cultural and educational, media and publication, art and sports institutions, which we refer to as cultural and educational experts.

Both economic and technical experts and cultural and educational experts have made great contribution to the economic and social development of Guangzhou and are indispensable parts of the human resources of Guangzhou.
