The lotus plant has long been a major part of Chinese culture. Since it grows in mud but blossoms into a lovely flower, it is recognized as the incarnation of beauty and purity, as well as honesty and persistence. Over the centuries, the Chinese people have composed hundreds of thousands of poems, paintings and sculptures inspired by or otherwise praising the lotus. What's more, the lotus also symbolizes fertility, since the pronunciation of the word "莲子" , or "lotus seeds", sounds like "连子", or "having, or connected to, children".
From now until September is the flowering season of the lotus. To experience the charm of the lotus firsthand, you may visit the following renowned scenic spots in and around the city of Guangzhou.
