Liwan District: Overhang Buildings with Xiguan Charms

 
The "Red Mansion" – The Shamian Customs Building with 102 years of history, stands on time-mellowed Shamian Street.

On the morning of Dec. 17th, Guangzhou Mayor Zhang Guangning, when examining the progress of comprehensive regulation on the living environment to welcome the Asian Games in Liwan District, encouraged the district to bring into play the aspects of "culture" and "ecology" so as to present a new Liwan, of Lingnan characteristics, and rejuvenate Xiguan charms.

During his inspection of the European style recreational area in Shamian, Zhang noted that Shamian had abundant historical and cultural heritage sites, unique architectural styles and favorable natural conditions. After this comprehensive regulation and improvement, it will become the one and only European style recreational area in the country.

Mayor Zhang also examined the progress of the facade renovation project in Zhongshan Ba Road and the construction of Chen Clan Academy Lingnan Cultural Square. Buildings along Zhongshan Ba Road are under renovation with greyish tiles fixed on the facades to create a historical look. Zhang nodded in satisfaction and expressed that the "four-in-one" regulation in all districts should be implemented according to actual conditions and with their distinctions. Liwan must bring out the characteristics of Lingnan architecture, overhang buildings and Xiguan charms. The Chen Clan Academy, Square 1st phase, is under construction and the 2nd phase will be advanced in a timely fashion.
